Cameron Reny Announces Re-Election Bid for Senate District 13

Cameron Reny, a dedicated advocate for the people of Bristol and the surrounding areas, has officially declared her intention to seek re-election for Senate District 13 in Maine. Reny, who was born and raised in Bristol, has already made significant strides in addressing crucial issues such as housing, climate resiliency, and affordable healthcare during her first term in the Maine Senate.

“I am proud of the progress made by working together. I’ve made so many good connections and working relationships over the past year with colleagues and constituents from both sides of the aisle, and it helps to get things done. My goal is strong communities and a good, sustainable future for our children and grandchildren,” stated Sen. Reny.

Elected in November 2022, Reny currently represents Senate District 13, covering most of Lincoln County, along with the towns of Washington and Windsor. She serves as Senate Chair of the Marine Resources Committee and is a member of the Health Coverage, Insurance, and Financial Services Committee. Additionally, Reny plays a vital role in the Maine Climate Council as a member of the Coastal and Marine Working Group.

Reny’s roots in a working-class family in Bristol shaped her commitment to hard work and community service. After graduating from Lincoln Academy, she earned her undergraduate degree from Guilford College in North Carolina. Reny returned to Maine to pursue a Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of Southern Maine, dedicating her career to working with Maine children and families as a public school counselor.

In her first year, Sen. Reny achieved legislative success with five bills enacted, including LD 722, addressing the health insurance referral process for specialists. This critical legislation, effective from January 1, 2024, aims to expedite mental health services for students by eliminating obstacles in the referral process.

Reny’s commitment to improving Maine extends to increasing local healthy foods in school cafeterias and funding affordable housing initiatives in rural areas. Several bills, including one addressing the high cost of prescription medications, have been carried over to the upcoming session.

Looking ahead, Sen. Reny expressed anticipation for the upcoming session, highlighting her dedication to continuing important legislative work. She emphasized the opportunity to address gun safety legislation, especially in light of the recent Lewiston shooting. Reny aims to support laws preventing the access of deadly weapons to individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

State Senator Phillip Wheeler Announces Re-Election Bid

In a bid to continue his service to the people of Kentucky, State Senator Phillip Wheeler, a Republican hailing from Pikeville, officially filed his candidacy papers on December 19 at the Capitol. Wheeler, who currently represents the 31st Senate District encompassing Elliott, Johnson, Lawrence, Martin, and Pike counties, is seeking re-election for another four-year term in 2024.

Wheeler entered office in 2019 after winning a special election and secured his first full term in 2020 with an impressive mandate, earning over 72 percent of the votes cast in the district.

As per statements from Wheeler’s campaign, recent reports to the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance reveal a robust campaign fund with nearly $215,000 in contributions. The diverse donor base includes individuals from various sectors such as attorneys, physicians, executives, small business owners, organized labor, educators, retirees, and those in the energy sector.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Wheeler stated, “I am deeply humbled yet greatly encouraged by the amount of support my campaign has received from such a variety of people and organizations as we launch our efforts for 2024.” He emphasized the honor he feels in representing the constituents of the 31st Senate District and highlighted his dedication to their causes over the past five years.

In the campaign statement, Wheeler outlined his legislative achievements in areas such as education, transportation, tourism, and economic development. Wheeler holds significant roles in the Senate, serving as the vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Economic Development, Tourism, and Labor Committee. Ashwin Ramaswami, a second-generation Indian American and accomplished software engineer with expertise in election security and technology law, has declared his candidacy for the Georgia State Senate. If successful, he would make history as the first Indian American in the Georgia State Senate, the first member of Generation Z, and the only State Senator holding both a computer science and a law degree.

Ramaswami, a Democrat, aims to represent Senate District 48, and his candidacy comes in the wake of the indictment of the incumbent State Senator, Shawn Still, for alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Ramaswami’s unique combination of skills extends to community engagement, where he taught classes on Hindu philosophy and culture to middle and high school students at Chinmaya Mission. He also founded the Dharmic Law Student Organization at Georgetown University Law Center, focusing on providing programs for Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Jain students.

Born and raised in Johns Creek, GA, Ramaswami has deep roots in his community. He expresses gratitude for the support he received throughout his career, spanning from technology startups to law and policy endeavors. His work at Schmidt Futures led to the creation of philanthropic initiatives supporting open-source software communities, influencing the introduction of the Securing Open-Source Software Act in Congress.

Temons, a native of Lock Haven and a graduate of Niagara University, brings a unique background to the race. With a history of owning a business focused on building houses, he transitioned to a nonprofit role where he now designs home improvement projects for accessibility. His work primarily benefits seniors, individuals with disabilities, and veterans, allowing them to maintain their independence and stay in their homes.

In a nearly four-minute YouTube video introducing his candidacy, Temons emphasized his belief that effective leadership begins with listening. Marcia Kelbon Announces Candidacy for State Senate in 2024

The seat, currently held by Democrat Kevin Van De Wege, is up for grabs as he sets his sights on the state Commissioner of Public Lands role.

Having relocated to western Washington in 1982, Kelbon reflects on a time when it was comparatively easier for young people to pursue higher education, buy homes, and build families with quality education in public schools. Keen on addressing the challenges facing today’s youth, she aims to create a more supportive environment for starting businesses and fostering growth.

Kelbon is a proud alumna of the University of Washington, holding bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering, along with a law degree from the School of Law. Her professional journey includes roles as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Navy, a patent attorney for the state Attorney General’s office, and a 19-year tenure as a senior executive and general counsel in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Notably, Kelbon’s commitment extends beyond politics. She is an active volunteer with organizations such as East Jefferson Habitat for Humanity, the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, and the North Hood Canal Chamber of Commerce. Her pro bono legal services have benefited the Emerald Towns Alliance and the Jefferson County Fair Board.

Kelbon, who resides with her husband of 43 years and a boxer dog on a tree farm in Quilcene, emphasizes the importance of community engagement. Two of her three adult children, along with a granddaughter, also call the Olympic Peninsula home.

State Senator Shannon Grove has officially declared that she will not be throwing her hat into the ring for the 2024 congressional elections.
