Former Erie County Democratic Party Chairman, Jim Wertz, officially launched his campaign for the 49th district Pennsylvania State Senate seat. Wertz, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters, made the announcement at the Ember + Forge coffee shop in downtown Erie on Tuesday.

A seasoned advocate for his community, Wertz is set to go head-to-head with incumbent Republican State Senator Dan Laughlin, who has held the position since his election in 2016.

Wertz’s journey from his working-class roots in Reading, PA, to the heart of Erie County, spans 25 years. His initial move to the region was driven by his pursuit of education at Edinboro University. Since 2005, Wertz has played a pivotal role in shaping young minds, serving as a dedicated educator in journalism and digital media at Edinboro University. His contributions extend beyond the classroom, as he has actively engaged in leadership roles within the faculty union and university administration.

The announcement comes as no surprise to those familiar with Wertz’s longstanding commitment to public service. Elected as Chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party in 2018, Wertz has been a driving force behind numerous successful candidates and campaigns. His strategic and collaborative approach has been evident in his work, leaving an indelible mark on the local political landscape.

Prior to his formal entry into the State Senate race, Wertz resigned from his position as Chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party in November 2023. This move reflects his dedication to a new chapter in public service, one where he aims to directly impact the legislative landscape for the benefit of the 49th district.
