Jacksonville Beach City Councilman Cory Nichols Resigns

In a surprising announcement on Tuesday, Jacksonville Beach City Councilman Cory Nichols tendered his resignation from the city council, specifying two compelling reasons for his departure. Nichols, who has represented district No. 1, outlined an effective date of Saturday, December 30, in a resignation letter addressed to City Clerk of Jacksonville Beach Sheri Gosselin, Mayor Christine Hoffman, council members, and city staff.

Nichols commenced his letter by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Jacksonville Beach for the past five years on the city council and an additional four years as a member of the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency. He highlighted his tenure as vice mayor, describing it as a “tremendous honor” bestowed upon him by fellow council members.

The primary reason Nichols cited for stepping down revolves around the increasing demands of his professional responsibilities within his personal company. He noted that the elevated commitments and travel requirements associated with his role have reached a point where they could potentially hinder his ability to wholeheartedly serve the Jacksonville Beach community.

“My professional responsibilities to my company and the travel requirements involved have increased to a point that could potentially interfere with my ability to be as committed to my role in Jacksonville Beach as I would like,” Nichols stated in the letter.

The second factor influencing Nichols’ decision is the recent state mandate that compels local elected officials to transition their financial disclosures from Form 1 to Form 6. In his resignation letter, Nichols described this move as a “major overreach” and a direct assault on the concept of ‘Home Rule’ for local communities. He expressed concern that the detailed personal financial disclosure requirements on Form 6 are “unnecessarily invasive” and could dissuade highly qualified candidates from participating in local government, ultimately harming beloved communities.

Nichols concluded his letter on a positive note, expressing optimism about the city’s future and acknowledging the accomplishments achieved during his tenure.

“We have accomplished an incredible amount during my time on council, and I truly believe that I am leaving the City in an outstanding financial position, with substantially improved transparency, and with a City Staff that loves that Jax Beach community,” Nichols said in the letter.

As Jacksonville Beach faces the departure of a dedicated public servant, the city anticipates changes ahead and will soon embark on the process of appointing a replacement to represent district No. 1 on the City Council.
