Indiana State Representative Randy Lyness Announces Retirement

In a recent announcement, State Representative Randy Lyness, a prominent West Harrison Republican, declared his decision to retire from the Indiana House at the conclusion of his current term. This move adds his name to the list of Republican legislators opting out of seeking reelection in 2024.

Representing Ohio, Switzerland, and Dearborn counties, along with a portion of Jefferson County since 2015, Lyness has been a stalwart figure in Indiana politics. Currently serving as the vice chair of the House Committee on Local Government, Lyness made it clear that he intends to fulfill his current term but will not pursue reelection in 2024. While no specific reason was cited for his retirement, Lyness expressed gratitude for the privilege of representing House District 68 in southeast Indiana.

“Over the last eight years, it has been a privilege to represent the good people of House District 68,” Lyness stated. “I’m grateful for all the support I have received throughout my time in the legislature and for the opportunity to serve our communities.”

During his tenure, Lyness played a crucial role in supporting significant legislative initiatives. In 2022, he backed the passage of a $1 billion tax-relief package, marking the largest tax cut in the state’s history and aimed at supporting hardworking Hoosiers. Lyness also supported the new biennial state budget, expected to save taxpayers an estimated $430 million over the next two years through tax relief. Additionally, he endorsed efforts to further reduce the state’s individual income tax, positioning Hoosiers to have one of the lowest rates in the nation by 2027.

Lyness, a lifelong resident of Southeast Indiana, resides in West Harrison with his wife, Linda. They have three sons and 12 grandchildren, all of whom live locally. Beyond his political endeavors, Lyness has owned and operated Randall Lyness Builders for more than 30 years, specializing in custom homes, remodeling, and small commercial projects.

As the veteran legislator prepares to step back from the political arena, his retirement marks the end of an era in Indiana politics.
