In a bid for continuity and continued growth, Mayor Tom Watson has officially filed to run for a fourth term, expressing his commitment to advancing Owensboro’s connections at various governmental levels. The 73-year-old mayor, who has already served three terms, brings a wealth of experience and a vision for the city’s future.

Before entering politics, Mayor Watson had a distinguished career as the president and co-owner of Tom Watson’s Prosthetic and Orthotics Lab, where he dedicated 50 years before retiring. His initial stint as mayor spanned from 2005 to 2008, and after a hiatus of nearly a decade, he returned and secured a second term in 2016. Currently in his third term, Mayor Watson believes his extensive network with government leaders in Frankfort, Washington, and Indianapolis positions him uniquely.

“I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who’s really established more relationships with Frankfort and Washington and Indianapolis, actually over the past 40 years,” remarked Mayor Watson.

Highlighting his statewide roles on the Kentucky League of Cities and the You Decide! Kentucky board, Mayor Watson emphasized his commitment to representing Owensboro on a broader scale. Looking ahead, he envisions a significant change in collaboration with the State of Indiana to secure a connector to the interstate. This move, he believes, will not only boost Owensboro’s economy but also enhance tourism and accessibility.

“We’re kind of put on a cul-de-sac. (A connector) would really be helpful for economic development and bring more tourism to our community, and easier access to Owensboro,” Mayor Watson stated.

While advocating for a unified City-County government, Mayor Watson expressed a particular desire to strengthen connections with the Daviess County Fiscal Court. Addressing the city’s current financial state, he noted that, if re-elected, it would mark the first term without having to combat debt. This, he believes, could pave the way for more developments and improvements for Owensboro residents.

“There are things on the horizon that may develop. There might be a boat dock in the future, you never know. But there are just things that have a clearer view of where we are financially and how we can provide the best community for Owensboro residents,” Mayor Watson remarked.

As the mayoral race gains momentum, Mayor Watson‘s candidacy sets the stage for a discussion on the city’s future, economic growth, and the potential for impactful collaborations on both regional and national fronts.
