Wednesday night’s third GOP presidential primary debate in Miami showcased a heated exchange of ideas and criticisms among the contenders, with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley commanding the center stage. In a policy-heavy affair, Haley engaged in sharp exchanges with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The spirited debate also featured former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, while former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner in the race, chose to skip the event once again.

Haley, a former U.N. ambassador under Trump, has been steadily gaining ground in the polls since the debates commenced in August. In a recent Iowa poll, she pulled even with DeSantis, positioning herself as a strong contender in the Republican primary. However, she faces a challenge in winning the support of influential financiers like Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, hedge fund titan Paul Singer, and Interactive Brokers founder Thomas Peterffy, who are yet to declare their candidate of choice.

One of the most intense moments of the debate occurred when entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy targeted Haley’s daughter, citing her use of TikTok despite Haley’s previous criticism of Ramaswamy for the same. “Leave my daughter out of your voice,” Haley retorted sharply, condemning Ramaswamy’s attack as “scum.” The exchange highlighted the fierce competition and personal clashes within the GOP race.

Former Gov. Haley’s rise in the polls has challenged DeSantis’ previously comfortable second-place position. The debate witnessed a flurry of attacks and counterattacks, with Haley emerging as one of the top candidates who faced scrutiny from her rivals. Notably, former President Donald Trump, despite his absence from the debate, remains the clear frontrunner in the Republican primary, leading both Haley and DeSantis among likely Republican Iowa caucus participants.

As the GOP presidential primary continues to intensify, Haley’s performance in the debates and her ability to navigate challenges from fellow contenders will be closely watched. With the race heating up, the candidates are gearing up for further confrontations and policy discussions in the coming months, shaping the future of the Republican party’s leadership.
