State Senator Mike Dugan, a Republican representing Georgia’s 30th District, has officially declared his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District seat. The seat is currently held by four-term Republican Congressman Drew Ferguson, who announced on December 14, 2023, that he would not seek reelection after the 118th Congress.

Dugan, a seasoned politician and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel with over 20 years of service, made the announcement on his social media page. He expressed his commitment to representing the constituents of District 3 and outlined his priorities for the region.

Having been elected to Georgia’s 30th District in 2012, Dugan has been a staunch advocate for the residents of Carroll, Douglas, and Paulding counties. His military background as an Army Ranger and Master Paratrooper, coupled with his subsequent experience as a contractor in Carrolton, brings a unique blend of leadership and practical experience to his political career.

Congressman Drew Ferguson, a former West Point Mayor, cited a desire to spend more time with his family as the primary reason for not seeking a fifth term. He looks forward to retirement and the opportunity to enjoy quality time with his wife Julie, children, and grandchildren.

The race to fill Congressman Ferguson’s seat is already competitive, with at least three other Republicans vying for the position. Retired Army pilot and state Rep. David Jenkins, Republican activist Jim Bennett, and Michael Corbin, who had a previous unsuccessful congressional bid in Gwinnett County, are among the contenders, according to the Associated Press.

To focus on his congressional campaign, Dugan has announced his resignation from the State Senate. Governor Brian Kemp is anticipated to call for a special election to fill Dugan’s unexpired seat in the state legislature.

The upcoming election for Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District is poised to be a closely watched and hotly contested race as candidates vie for the opportunity to represent the constituents and address the pressing issues facing the region.
